Many of the organic materials generated at home can be transformed into a usable product. Common organic materials that can be composted include vegetable wastes, sod, grass clippings, leaves, hay, straw, chopped corncobs, corn stalks and untreated sawdust. The composted product can then be used to condition soil and will add structure and nutrients to the soil. It will also attract earthworms and will keep pest problems down. Compost can also be used as mulch and in potting mixtures.
