Jackson County Health Department expanded its environmental education program
in 2004. An environmental educator was hired to coordinate activities and
projects with schools and other groups. This program is integrated with
the overall efforts of the JCHD Recycling Program.
Examples of Environmental Education activities:
- Promote and educate students in grades K-12 about recycling by providing
hands-on and inquiry based recycling presentations for grades K-12
- School presentations are approximately 30 – 45 minutes in duration
(15-20 minutes of informative lecture, followed by an activity to reinforce
the topic)
- Presentations have been developed in accordance with Illinois State
Learning Standards (Click here to see presentation
schedule )
- Create an individualized recycling education program for schools and
assist with integration into curriculum
- Publish the Garbage Gazette, a quarterly newsletter (Click
here to see latest issue )
- Offer technical assistance to schools on waste disposal and recycling
issues
- Loan out books and videos to schools and community groups (Click
here to view list )
- Assist schools with recycling fundraisers (Click
here to view list)
We are currently working with many schools around the county on a grant-funded
recycling collection & education program. Here are some tools to help
these schools implement the program:
