Community Programming

  • Nursing division works to prevent disease at the community level and by providing personal prevention services.

Reduce the Spread of Disease

  • Serves as central reporting center for communicable diseases occurring within our community. Local physicians, laboratories, hospitals, and schools report many communicable diseases directly to our department.

  List of reportable communicable diseases

  • Monitors disease incidence in our community and plan appropriate interventions. Individual case reports are reviewed for appropriateness of treatment and treatment of contacts when necessary.
  • Assists local health care providers in notifying and treating contacts to communicable diseases, thereby reducing the further spread of such diseases.
  • Serves the community as important sources of information and referral regarding communicable disease.

Personal Clinical Services 

Tuberculosis Program, ext. 151 

  • Provides TB skin testing during Monday & Wednesday immunization clinics and at work-sites on request.
  • Provides preventive treatment to county residents with latent TB infection. 
  • Treat those with active TB disease who reside in Jackson County.

Sexual Health Clinic, ext. 115 or 150

  • Counseling, testing and treatment for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis on a sliding fee scale.  Herpes blood test is also available ($12 fee).
  • Hepatitis C and HIV testing available for certain risk groups.
  • Partner notification, testing & treatment or referral

Immunizations (click here for more information)

  • Vaccines for infants, children, and adults. 
  • Walk-in immunization clinics are Monday and Wednesday 12 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Thursday 12 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • TB skin testing is available Monday and Wednesday 12 p.m. - 3:30 p.m..
  • Influenza and pneumonia vaccine are also offered each fall at over 50 community based clinics.

Vision and Hearing Screenings, ext. 303

  • Provided at schools and daycares throughout the county at required grade levels.
  • Appointment Required.

School, Sports, and Camp Physical Exams, ext. 119 or 150 

  • Provided for children birth through 18 years of age.
  • Immunizations and blood lead testing are also available during these exams as needed.
  • Appointments required for physicals and blood lead testing. 

Family Planning Clinics, ext. 150

  • Provide education, counseling, exams, and supplies for men & women in need of contraceptive services
  • Breast exams, PAP smears, STD testing and general health physical exams are done

HIV Counseling and Testing, ext. 150

  • Provided at weekly clinics at the health department and community based outreach sites or "Chris Clinics". 
  • Counselors help clients identify their risks and establish a risk-reduction plan.
  • All services are confidentitial, clients may choose anonymous testing if they prefer.

Genetic Diagnostic Clinic (click for more information), ext. 111

  • Clinics held monthly and staffed by a medical geneticist (MD) and genetic counselor from Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis. 
  • Helps families understand their genetic condition, inheritance pattern and the chance of recurrence, and options for dealing with such disorders.
  • Offers counseling, education, and diagnosis to pre-conceptional couples, prenatal clients, adults and children
  • Medical evaluation can include a physical exam, review of family history, lab tests and x-rays

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention, ext. 149

  • Screening and testing for blood lead levels in children.
  • Case management of children with elevated blood lead levels, including education on sources of lead, strategies to decrease lead levels and prevention activities.
