The 2010-2015 priority health problems for Jackson County are:

  • Cardiovascular Disease including diabetes and obesity
  • Health Care Access  with a focus on oral health
  • Sexually transmitted disease

 Current health education programming includes:

Coordinated School Health (CSH) Programs

Through a collaborative effort with Southern Illinois Healthcare and various other agencies, training, materials and assistance in the adoption of a health curriculum for grades Pre K-8 are provided.

Assist schools in developing programs to address the 8 components of coordinated school health which include health educatino, physical education, school health services, school nutrition services, school counseling, social services, and healthy school environment.

Tobacco Prevention and Control  

  • Promote the Illinois Tobacco Quitline 1-866-QUIT-YES (1-866-784-8937) 
  • School and community presentations
  • Provide educational presentations and information on secondhand smoke and promote smoke free workplaces

Family and Youth Violence Prevention

Traffic Safety

Provide child safety seat checks at schools and in the community.  Nationally ertified child passenger safety technicians provide car seat checks by appointment.

Project Power

Work with the American Diabetes Association to train church members to become Project Power ambassadors to educate their congregations on diabetes
